Prepare your thesis defence: the questions that come
Defence, oral exam or colloquium: in the end you sit in front of examiners who have read your thesis and know exactly where it is thin. Format and length are set by your examination regulations. The questions about the thesis itself, though, are surprisingly predictable.
Typical questions about your thesis
Prepare an answer of one minute at most to each of these questions:
- Why this topic, and exactly this research question?
- Why this method and not another?
- How did you select your sample or interviewees?
- What are the limits of your thesis?
- What would you do differently today?
- How do your results relate to the theory from your second chapter?
- What do your results mean for practice or for research?
- Which source was central to your thesis, and why?
- What would be the next research question?
The weak spots get asked first
Examiners probe where something struck them while reading. So the best preparation is not to rehearse your strengths but to know the weaknesses of your own thesis. A limitation you name and put in context yourself comes across as confident; one you defend comes across as unsure.
How to answer well
- Start short: the answer in one sentence first, then the reasoning.
- Back it up with your thesis: “Chapter 4 shows …” is stronger than a general statement.
- Admit limitations without talking your thesis down.
- If you do not know something, say so and show how you would find out. Do not make anything up.
Rehearse out loud, don’t just reread
Testing yourself consolidates knowledge much better than rereading; it is one of the most robust findings in learning research (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). For your defence, that means: have someone ask you the questions and answer out loud, instead of reading your thesis a third time.
Roastgaard’s exam prep runs a mock question round on your own thesis, with an examiner’s voice, and grades your answers like the real defence. For an oral exam with subject questions, it builds you a study plan from your course materials.
